#Top15YoungGeeks: Nominations Open For 2019
Geek is the new cool! Geek is the new sexy! These are the things you would hear on the digital streets. Geeks have changed the world as we know it, there is no joy they enjoy than making cool tech that matters.
The year 2018 saw the South African Geek Culture getting a boost with Minister Ayanda Dlodlo LIVE Coding in front over 200 Geeks and also spent time assessing Midnight pitches at the Public Service Hackathon. Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, known as the "4IR Commander-In-Chief" addressed the Festive Coding event - SummerDevDays.

Government is looking into Hackathons for digital solutions and this is where South African Geeks play. Question is, who are these Geeks who are solution developers?
Top 15 Young Geeks is an initiative created by Geekulcha to identify and expose Geeks who are playing a role to transform the South African digital ecosystem. South Africa is living up to the 4IR era, this needs champions - the South African Geeks have a critical role to play.
Every year during Youth Month (June), Geekulcha announces the Top 15 Young Geeks for the year for these reasons:
- Make their work known; get their apps into the hands of users; help channel funding opportunities
- Show the capacity of the South African Tech ecosystem for work or collaborative opportunities
- Celebrating #GeekExcellence to build up the momentum onto the Geeks
2019 NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN: geekulcha.com/young-geeks
The public may nominate Geeks who deserve the recognition, one may also nominate him/herself. Nominations will be open till 30 April 2019. A selection process will take place during May. The Top 15 Young Geeks will be announced 03 June 2019.
Tiyani Nghonyama, COO of Geekulcha says "The South African tech ecosystem is at a fragile state, the skills capacity is a worry and we need to stay focused towards an upskilling pipeline. We need to create a competitive state within the ecosystem and strive for quality. We also hope to see more females on the list this year."
The 2018 Top Young Geeks included change makers in Machine Learning, agri-tech, emerging tech and a whole lot more.
Geekulcha also calls on Corporate SA to support more skills development platforms and to also look into funding viable solutions. The ongoing work with the Department of Public Service and Administration and the Centre for Public Service Innovation is set on the realization and implementation of the solutions from the Public Service Hackathon - IgniteHack.
