#SummerDevDays To Build Quality Coding Capacity

Throughout the years, the UNISA School of Computing (Pro Bono) has collaborated with Geekulcha, driving community developer days in growing tech skills and socially-relevant innovation challenges such as the Random Hacks of Kindness(RHOK) Pretoria hackathon.

The South African tech ecosystem grows at own pace with various activities taking place on the ground. We need to assess, monitor, nurture, account, guide and forecast the grow of the digital ecosystem. Summer Developer Days (#SummerDevDays) is a 2-day of coding where one learns from the community and gets rewarded on the effort.

Creating an enabling environment for local techies to connect and build capacity on their skills. Summer Dev Days is led by UNISA School of Computing and Geekulcha in partnership with Ikusasa Technology Solutions, Red Bull Basement and ITWeb as a build up to the Security Summit 2019 Hackathon (SS19Hack).

Supported by the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) and the Centre for Public Service Innovation (CPSI) post the National Public Service Hackathon.

Target: Aspiring developers, high school learners, designers, government officials/techies, adults, etc.

To help the participants, there will be Code Clinics setup with specialists to remedy code pains that the coders would be having. The Code Clinics will focus on web and mobile applications, Internet of Things, Blockchain, Secure Coding (InfoSecurity) and others.

Geekulcha’s COO Tiyani Nghonyama says “there has been a lot of talk of the 4th Industrial Revolution in 2018, as such we need to build capacity and get local techies to code for the 4IR with quality. We are also setting up a Government table for officials to also Code the Talk in 4IR.”

The event is open for both beginners and advanced developers and there will be prizes for different awards including honouring the Geekulcha 2018 Top 15 Young Geeks. Participants are required to make use of Open Source tools and software.
