Local Meetup for $60 000 #OCIC17 Challenge
Annually, over $9.5 Trillion is spent on public contracts by Governments from around the world. There is a need to bringing more efficiency and integrity in these public contracts.
The Open Contracting Partnership and Open Data Institute are looking for heroes (innovators) who can come up with game-changing solutions in public procurement. Open Contracting Innovation Challenge 2017 is now open for applications.
With $60 000 in prizes, the global challenge is calling on anyone/groups to bring forward their innovative ideas with a potential to change or improve the way of things.
Any idea is valid, here is what is in store:
`• June 2017:
- Government Innovation prize
- Six ‘Finalist Prizes’ - $5,000`
If your application is shortlisted by our judges as one of six finalists, you will receive a cash prize of $5,000 to take your idea forward
`• September 2017:
- One ‘Grand Prize’ - $30,000`
Locally, Geekulcha is driving the local activities of the challenge and hosted a workshop on the 5th of May. The meetup was to help guide the participants in entering the challenge as well as to how the South African public procurement system work.
Hosted at the Tshwane Innovation Zone, the meetup was supported by the Open Government Partnership South Africa through DPSA and helped shed more light into the participants.

The Open Contracting Innovation Challenge is open until 24 May.
Tom Hunter from the Open Data Institute also joined in through Skype to guide the participants and urged them to apply in time.
