Getting Geeky On #AfricaCodeWeek

Africa as a developing continent, needs to secure all the right skills as possible - coding is one of those skills. One of the initiatives behind this is the Africa Code Week supported by Google.

Coding is the literacy of the digital age indeed: a whole new language for children to speak fluently and express themselves in the 21st century. This is what brought SAP, the Cape Town Science Centre and the Galway Education Centre to join forces and give birth to Africa Code Week.

Through the popular #gkVacWork programme, Geekulcha drove the Africa Code Week by grooming Future Geeks by a spending a week coding and building products/services.

Furthermore, the coding train continued to the Northern Cape, Kimberley - powered by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDaT). Coding sessions were conducted at Vuyolethu High School, where youngsters coded robots and hacked a skateboard.

Coding sessions in were run by the Geekulcha together with the Diamond Creative Vision Hub. There was greater interest from the youngsters about coding.

Africa Code Week was yet another initiative to grow the Digital Economy in the country. We are looking forward to being more engaged in skills development initiative.
