Geekulcha On Open Data

Geekulcha On Open Data

They say "Data is the new oil" in this smart growing world. Data is truly an important aspect of life helping us to plan, decide, inform and unlock new opportunities. The possibilities are endless as far data data is concerned and the most important thing is to have the know-how.

Since 2015, Geekulcha had joined efforts with various organizations such as OpenUp (previously Code4SA), The Innovation Hub, Northern Cape Dept. of Economic Development and others. Events and challenges like the Responsive Cities Challenge, Open Dataquests and more have been hosted in building Data interest around the country.

Geekulcha places Data Literacy on top of everything in the South African Open Data movement. One of the measures taken was to integrate Open Data as part of Geekulcha-driven hackathons such as GKHack17/8, RHoK Pretoria and NCDevHack. An initiative called Open Data for Innovation and Smart Citizenship (ODISC) was created to help accelerate data skills capacity in the Geeks ecosystem.

For 2018, Geekulcha has been working with the South African Open Data project to help drive sector-focused hackathons such as the Air Quality Hackathon hosted at the TUT Soshanguve campus.

  • International Open Data Day Kathu and Kimberley

Data is indeed an important aspect of life, tech developers/innovators need to evolve in this 4th Industrial Revolution and turn data into new innovation and inform better. This is a collaborative effort and everyone must commit to the drive achieving an ethical and intelligent data-centric state.
